Ted Androli’s infield hit in the top of the eighth inning gave him his second RBI of the game, and completed a late inning comeback for the Kenyon-Wanamingo Knights giving them an eight inning 7-6 win over the Pine Island Panthers. The eighth inning run was the third consecutive inning that the Knights had scored a single run to help them comeback from an 8-6 lead that the Panthers had held since the fourth inning.
K-W’s Connor Sviggum earned the win throwing four innings of scoreless relief after taking over from starting pitcher Drew Sathrum. The Panthers’ Matt Lien took the loss pitching a complete game.
The Knights took an early lead with a single run in the first inning when Gavin Roosen, who had singled, scored on a wild pitch. They added a second run in the second inning on an RBI fielders’ choice by Jared Clawiter that scored Carter Leininger.
K-W took what looked like a commanding four run lead with an additional two runs in the third inning. Lead off hitter Jake Whipple walked, stole second base and was moved to third on a fielders’ choice. He scored on a ball hit by Drew Sathrum when the Panthers failed to throw out Whipple at the plate. After Sathrum had stolen second base, he was driven in on an RBI single by Ethan Benda for the 4-0 lead.
The Panthers tied the score in their half of the third inning with some key hits and a fortunate bounce. Brady Braaten led off the comeback with a single followed by walks to Aaron Gillard and Braden Aakre to load the bases. Bryce Hinrichsen hit a 2 RBI double to cut the Knights lead in half. Derek Rucker followed with a single that loaded the bases once again. Tucker Hanson then hit a ball that handcuffed an infielder and allowed two more runners to score and tie the game at 4-4.
In the fourth inning, the Panthers took a 6-4 lead when Matt Lien’s 2 RBI double drove in Matt Huus and Aaron Gillard who had both singled.
The Knights’ comeback began in the sixth inning. Luke Rechtzigel lead off the inning with a single followed by a single from Ethan Benda and Jared Clawiter to load the bases. Ted Androli was hit by a pitch to scored Rechtzigel to put the Knights within a run of the Panthers.
K-W scored the tying run in the seventh inning on Ethan Benda’s RBI double ( his third hit of the game ) that drove in Drew Sathrum who had singled and stolen second base.
Ethan Benda was 3 for 4 in the game with 2 doubles and 2 RBI for the Knights. Drew Sathrum had 2 hits, 2 runs and 1 stolen base. Ted Androli had 2 RBI, a single and two HBP.
The Panthers’ Brady Braaten had 2 hits in the game with one run scored. Aaron Gillard scored 2 runs, had one hit and a walk, while Matt Lien picked up a double, 2 RBI, a HBP and pitched 8 innings.
The Knights are now 5-5 on the season and will play today at Byron at 5PM. Pine Island falls to 4-8, and will next play on Thursday hosting Triton at 5PM.
